The 1946 Boston Red Sox won the American League pennant easily, but over in the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers needed a playoff to determine who would represent the senior circuit in the World Series. With some extra time on their hands, the Red Sox scheduled a three-game exhibition series against a group of American League stars. While the exhibitions were intended to keep Boston’s players sharp, an injury to their best hitter would cast a shadow over the World Series.
